The inaugural season at The London Theatre Company's Bridge Theatre next to Tower Bridge, will include the premiere of Richard Bean and Clive Coleman's Young Marx, a comedy about the dissolute youth of the revolutionary in Victorian London, with Rory Kinnear and Oliver Chris, directed by Nicholas Hytner, opening on 26th October; Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, with David Calder, Michelle Fairley, David Morrissey and Ben Whishaw, in a promenade production directed by Nicholas Hytner, opening on 30th January; and the premiere of Barney Norris's Nightfall, a family saga set on a failing farm, directed by Laurie Sansom, opening on 8th May; followed by the premieres of Lucinda Coxon's Alys, Always, adapted from Harriet Lane's novel about a seemingly ordinary woman who is actually an unscrupulous confidence trickster, directed by Nicholas Hytner; John Hodge's dark comedy Flatpack; Nina Raine's A New Play About J S Bach, with Simon Russell Beale; Sam Holcroft's The Black Cloud, adapted from Fred Hoyle's sci-fi novel about a cloud that threatens to destroy life on earth; and Lucy Prebble's Carmen Havana, re-imagining Bizet's opera, directed by Nicholas Hytner, with choreography by Miguel Altunaga.
On The Casting Couch: Bertie Carvel and Richard Coyle will head the cast of James Graham's Ink, opening at the Almeida Theatre on 27th June; Kevin McNally will play the title role in Shakespeare's King Lear, at Shakespeare's Globe from 10th August; and Hadley Fraser, Ross Noble, Lesley Joseph, Dianne Pilkington and Summer Strallen will head the cast of Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan's musical Young Frankenstein, opening at the Garrick Theatre on 10th October.
Forthcoming productions by the Bristol Old Vic at the Theatre Royal, will include Chino Odimba's contemporary reworking of Euripides's Medea, from the translation by Robin Robertson, directed by George Mann, opening on 10th May; and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, with Julian Glover and Lyn Farleigh, directed by Simon Dormandy, opening on 14th June.
The recent Southwark Playhouse production of the musical The Toxic Avenger, book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, music by David Bryan, adapted from Lloyd Kaufman's 1985 film, in which a scientist who falls into a vat of radioactive goo emerges as a 7ft mutant with superhuman strength, determined to save New Jersey, end global warming and woo a blind librarian, directed by Benji Sperring, with choreography by Lucie Pankhurst, will be remounted at the Arts Theatre, off Charing Cross Road, opening on 3rd October.
The Rumour Machine says: that the Broadway musical Fun Home, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, music by Jeanine Tesori, adapted from Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir about her relationship with her father growing up in the family funeral home, directed by original director Sam Gold, will open at the Young Vic Theatre next summer; and that the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho, book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik, about a 1980s 'having it all' Wall Street trader who is also a serial killer, directed by Rupert Goold, which played at the Almeida Theatre in 2013 and on Broadway in 2016, may return to the Almeida next year. The Rumour Machine grinds on.
