Backstage Whispers overheard by Richard Andrews

Future productions at the National Theatre will include in the Olivier: the premiere of Rory Mullarkey's Saint George And The Dragon, the story of the knight who became a myth, directed by Lyndsey Turner, with choreography by Lynne Page, opening in October; and Shakespeare's Macbeth, with Rory Kinnear and Anne-Marie Duff, directed by Rufus Norris, opening in spring 2018; plus the return of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, with Lucian Msamati, directed by Michael Longhurst, in January; in the Lyttelton: the premiere of Network, adapted by Lee Hall from Paddy Chayefsky's 1976 film about a news anchor who's "mad as hell and is not going to take it any more", with Bryan Cranston, directed by Ivo van Hove, opening in November; a musical version of Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio, book by Dennis Kelly, with the score from the 1940 Disney film and other songs from the Disney back catalogue, directed by John Tiffany, with choreography by Steven Hoggatt, opening in December; in the Dorfman: Majority, a one-man show about democracy written and performed by Rob Drummond, directed by David Overend, opening in August; the premiere of David Eldridge's Beginning, set in the early hours of the morning following two people who met at a party, directed by Polly Findlay, opening in October; and Annie Baker's John, a seemingly simple story that explores ideas of self, mortality, and the solitude of human experience, with Georgia Engel, directed by James Macdonald, opening in early 2018.

The Menier Chocolate Factory, in Southwark, will stage Terence Rattigan's Love In Idleness, in which a young man returning from Canada during the Second World War is shocked to find his widowed mother is the mistress of a cabinet minister, with Eve Best, Anthony Head, Helen George and Edward Bluemel, opening on 20th March; and Peter Shaffer's Lettuce And Lovage, about a dismissed stately home tourist guide who develops an unlikely friendship with her former supervisor, opening on 17th May, both plays directed by Trevor Nunn.

The National Theatre of Scotland production of Lee Hall's Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour, with music by Handel, Bach and ELO, adapted from Alan Warner's novel The Sopranos, about a group of teenage girls from a Catholic school choir on a visit to Edinburgh, with Karen Fishwick, Caroline Deyga, Melissa Allan, Frances Maylie McCann, Kirsty MacLaren and Dawn Sievewright, directed by Vicky Featherstone, with choreography by Imogen Knight, will open at the Duke Of York's Theatre on 15th May.

The spring season at Hampstead Theatre, at Swiss Cottage, will include the premieres of Ryan Craig's Filthy Business, a comedy about the pressures of running an East End family business in the 1960s, with Sara Kestelman, directed by Edward Hall, opening on 16th March; and Stephen Brown's Occupational Hazards, adapted from Rory Stewart's memoir charting his time as the governor in a province of the newly liberated Iraq, directed by Simon Godwin, opening on 8th May; plus Branden Jacob-Jenkins's Gloria, a dark comedy about a group of ruthless editorial assistants at a Manhattan magazine, directed by Michael Longhurst, opening on 21st June.

The new season at the Young Vic Theatre, in Waterloo, will include Bertolt Brecht's Life Of Galileo, exploring the confrontation of religious fundamentalism and scientific evidence, with Brendan Cowell, directed by Joe Wright, opening on 16th May; the return of Federico Garcia Lorca's Yerma, the story of a woman whose inability to have a child tears her life apart, adapted and directed by Simon Stone, with Billie Piper, Maureen Beattie, Brendan Cowell, John MacMillan and Charlotte Randle, opening on 29th July; Arthur Arthur Kopit's Wings, in which a woman struggles to make sense of her world after she suffers a stroke, with Juliet Stevenson, directed by Natalie Abrahami, opening on 20th September; and Aesychlus's The Suppliant Women, in a new version by David Greig, a story of Egyptian refugee women sailing to Greece to seek sanctuary, directed by Ramin Gray, with choreography by Sasha Milavic Davies, opening on 16th November
